It has been a roller coaster of a year, so far. With so many deaths, and tens of thousands of people suffering, we can only pray to Allah and hope that its all over soon, and things get back to normal. It does seem though, thank God, that we will get back- to a ‘new’ normal.
What does this mean for the field of aesthetic medicine? In my opinion, we have seen that during the quarantine period many people opted to take care of themselves, more than usual. ‘Self-care’ was preached by all on social media, and many celebrities and bloggers shared selfies with face masks, discussing serums and cleansers. This was a good time to invest in yourself, prioritising inner and outer wellness. Many people, including myself, began eating more healthier home food, and popping multivitamins and immunity-boosting vitamin C and D! Some started cycling, practicing yoga and following youtube workout videos! All this was a step in the right direction. The ‘new’ normal, will mean that we will have to wear masks whenever we go out, and a strong immune system can help in minimizing the chances to catch covid-19, as well as other viruses/infections. We all must take care extra care, when we do start going out and practice safe social distancing measures.
Coming back to aesthetics, with the use of surgical face masks, we will notice less hyperpigmentation/melasma/freckles as these usually worsen with sun exposure. We will, however, focus on the eyes and forehead more, as others will be looking at those areas the most whilst speaking. Eyelid skin, being the thinnest skin in the body, requires appropriate serums/creams and treatments. Stress can show on the face, with frown lines and crow’s feet becoming prominent. Treatments for smoothening lines and wrinkles , dark circles, under-eye hollows etc….will become popular as well. If, unfortunately some have not been able to focus on healthy eating, these patients will look into body contouring options as well. I must add that nothing can beat a healthy diet, and active lifestyle and body contouring procedures will only be more successful if the patient focuses on healthy eating habits as well.
I pray this ‘new’ normal converts into the ‘old’ normal sooner rather than later-but until then , stay safe and stay beautiful!
